Another Hampton Roads summer is coming to an end, and it’s time to start thinking about getting your home ready for colder weather. Don’t know where to begin? We’re here with some of our favorite tips for preparing for the new season.
First of all, make a plan! Warmer weather will still be around for a while, so there’s no need to pull out your heavy blankets just yet. You probably have a pretty good idea of what can be put away and what is still useful. Plan to pack up or tear down some of your summer set-up every couple of weeks.

What stays, what goes? Storage things for the fall doesn’t have to be complicated.
Outdoor toys can be the first to go – with the kids back in school, they’ll be lying around most of the time. If you have a pool, keep it open until around the first day of fall. There’s one more perfect pool day before then! Grills can be used year-round, but be sure to clean it. Your patio furniture can (and should!) stick around until about Thanksgiving. One of the best things about our area is that we’re not forced inside as soon as the season changes, so make the most of it!
You’ll need some of your summer clothing to transition to fall. Hold onto anything that can be worn as a light layer. Summery prints and fabrics should be put away by the end of the month, though. Trade them out for your cozy fall sweaters.
Are you a gardener? Many people only put their green thumb to use during the summer. If tending fall crops doesn’t interest you, put away your gardening tools – shovels, trowels, watering cans – for the year. You might also think about clearing up room in your garage and moving your lawnmower or weed whacker into storage.
Rather than letting the seasonal switch-out overwhelm you, do it over the course of a month to six weeks. You’ll greet the peak of fall both clutter and stress free.
